More about me PNNL hardware, MICRO 2024, Chips2Future in Taipei

I'm Andrew Gui — an Electrical & Computer Engineering undergrad at the University of Washington. At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory I work on hardware: laying out multi-layer PCBs in Altium Designer, building and reworking prototype boards under the microscope, and testing Mini Sensorfish devices that measure fish passage through hydroelectric dams. Before that, I co-authored FPGA accelerator research for LLMs, published at MICRO 2024.

I founded Fitness Tech at UW, where we build wearable hardware and the MyFitnessTech app, and I box with the Husky Boxing Team. I also did the Chips2Future semiconductor program at NYCU in Taipei: TSMC fab tours, device simulation in TCAD Sentaurus, and MOSFET/FinFET coursework. When I'm not building something, I'm training, wakeboarding, skiing, or finding the next thing worth learning.

Experience

  1. Founder & President Fitness Tech @ UW Oct 2025 – Present 25-member engineering club · MyFitnessTech shipped

Founded and lead a 25-member engineering club and mentor its hardware, firmware, and app teams across four projects. Shipped MyFitnessTech to the App Store and Google Play. Wrote a $10K–$15K Student Technology Fee proposal for prototyping equipment, now under committee review.

  2. Undergrad Technical Intern — EE PNNL Jun 2024 – Present BatTag PCB in Altium · SMD rework · Mini Sensorfish

BatTag — Sub-Gram RF Telemetry PCB

BatTag is a sub-gram RF transmitter for wildlife telemetry, kept that small by federal limits on how much a tag can weigh. I rebuilt its schematic and multi-layer PCB layout from scratch in Altium Designer, matched it to the reference design to check the net topology, then revised the layout from there. I also build and rework the SMD prototype boards: hot-air reflow, component removal, and fine-pitch hand soldering under a stereo microscope, then bench checks for continuity and power rails.

Mini Sensorfish — Fish Passage Through Dams

Mini Sensorfish are autonomous sensors that travel through hydroelectric dams the way a fish would. I analyze their pressure, rotation, and acceleration data to show what fish go through on the way, for environmental impact assessments. I also calibrate the devices, run acceptance tests, and field-test them before they go out to dam sites.

  4. HPC Intern MICRO 2024 PNNL Jun 2023 – Aug 2023 LLM accelerators on FPGA · LNS vs. floating point

AI Hardware — LLM + LNS Architecture Codesign

Compared Logarithmic Number System and floating-point arithmetic for FPGA-based LLM inference accelerators, and contributed to the dynamic data format and architecture codesign. Co-authored the resulting paper, published at MICRO 2024.

Projects

The Fitness Tech app and the hardware that talks to it — plus a card game built in RTL on an FPGA.

MyFitnessTech home screen showing daily rings for nutrition, calories burned, steps and sleep, with water, steps, food and gym tiles below

A fitness app built with Flutter and Firebase, on iOS and Android. Nutrition, training, steps and sleep roll up into one daily view, alongside social features and a device layer that pairs the club's own hardware straight into the app. Live on the App Store and Google Play.

iOS Android Flutter Firebase BLE

A wearable band built on a custom ESP32 PCB. It brings several I²C sensors together, and its embedded firmware samples them and sends the data out over BLE.

A complete card game written in synthesizable SystemVerilog. A state machine handles dealing, hits, stands, and busts. The cards and table are drawn over VGA, sprites and game data live in on-chip memory, and the player controls it through hardware inputs on the board.
